AI Adoption: Evolution or Obsolescence

AI transformation isn’t just happening in the enterprise. It’s happening in the lives of the people within the enterprise too. This is much more visible in what some call the frontier, where the earliest adopters, both individual and corporate, are making strides in AI adoption by fully integrating the technology in the flow of daily life and business. Yet, statistically, meaningful adoption remains slow on both fronts (individual and corporate), and cost and security are becoming weaker and weaker excuses that may prove more costly as the frontier folks and the technology advances.

At first there was cost – why should I pay X dollars for my employees to be more efficient? How will the business realize that efficiency in dollars? Businesses had a point. An employee that completes their work in half the time can just as easily take the rest of their time off. There are no controls in place for that. This cost argument was strongest before automatic agentic workflows and deep multi-step reasoning with the ability to create multiple artifacts were demonstrated.

Security – the Achilles heel. From day one, security remained the biggest challenge for corporations to integrate AI into their business processes. For a while, no one in the industry had a good answer, let alone secure tools that could put the minds of IT professionals at ease. Today, security isn’t the specter it used to be. Many companies have implemented the technology with sufficient safeguards and ROI to justify adoption.

While cost and security are not one hundred percent resolved, advancements in both justify moving forward. What risks and opportunities does this present for the rest of the population? There is a widening gap between the adopters and non-adopters. Starting with individuals, the worker that integrates AI into their flow of work as a partner and heavy lifter gains tremendous advantages in speed, quality, and output – particularly in environments where AI is grounded securely in all of their data and activity. Work that would take hours, days, or weeks to get something worth looking at can be produced in a fraction of the time and effort with a handful of prompts and context orientation.

For corporations, reconciling data errors, eliminating the need for redundant and expensive ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) layers, and streamlining core business processes intelligently and autonomously can be a piece of cake requiring a fraction of the code previously required with far more resilience.

Companies and individuals that are not integrating AI into their businesses and lives could see themselves light years behind those that do. As dramatic as it sounds, the technology is moving at a pace never witnessed before. Can it get expensive beyond reason? Yes, if you’re not careful. Can it be a significant security risk? Yes, but what company hasn’t already been hacked prior to the use of AI. Now they have AI to counter and prevent attacks. The richness that AI integration can bring can’t be measured. Even if you’re behind, it isn’t too late to catch up.
